Sub-Saharan Africa is home to the rare and endangered African wild dog, commonly known as painted wolves or Cape hunting dogs. Wild dogs are one of the few mammals that look after sick, old or disabled members of the pack. They are specialized in hunting medium-sized prey between 15-50 kg such as antelope, springbok, and impala. The greatest threat to these form of wildlife is humans. They have an 80% success rate while hunting thanks to their coordinated hunting technique. They are nomads traveling over 50km a day and their territories range between 400-1500 km.Pups are given priority over the alpha pair and are looked after by the other members of the pack. There is an alpha breeding pair at the top of the hierarchy of the pack which means they are fed first before any other member of the pack. The fate of all wildlife depends on wild dogs and their value to the surrounding communities and we need to be stressed. ![]() Their predation helps to regulate the impact of ungulates on the ecosystem and the bio-mass in a process called “trophic cascade,” and by so doing, creates and preserves the habitats of a diverse and vast selection of animals and insects. Valeska Gert used the themes she addressed to confront middle-class moralities and their hypocrisy. To express sexuality, she highlights her eyes, her mouth and the movements of her body: “I wiggle my hips provocatively, hoist the black, very short skirt, and for an instant show white flesh above long, black stockings, and high-heeled shoes (a scandal at a time when dancers, if they weren’t dancing ballet, hopped across the stage barefoot). These very short pieces are, in fact, expressive pantomimes where mimicry, highlighted by make-up, is as important as the gestures. To bring them to life, she used both her talents as a dancer and as an actress. In the mid-1920s, Valeska Gert, an associate of the Dadaists, presented provocative solos in a cabaret in Berlin in which she played marginal characters: “Since I didn’t like the bourgeois, I danced the people dismissed by them, whores, procuresses, cast-offs, those who had slipped.” In the ruins of post-war Germany, where inflation, unemployment and prostitution were rife, these subjects touched a nerve. It was undoubtedly there that performance art was born. Determined to challenge the traditional idea of the performance and the objet d'art lost to commercialisation, they invented new forms, explored the burlesque and were capable of self-mockery. ![]() During the then futuristic evenings at the Cabaret Voltaire, hosted by the DADA group, the artists – sometimes decked out in ridiculous costumes – played noise music or recited sound poetry without words. This “act for art” aims to destabilise: the artist himself, the spectator, and the society around it. Performance art, on the other hand, takes it on and often even seeks it out. Dance, traditional or modern, seldom has contact with the burlesque. But there is one they avoid taking: that of ridicule, even feigned. In contrast to pieces in which little soldier dancers march “la tête haute et sans faire de faute” (head high, making no mistakes), Olga Mesa crawls on all fours, scratches her nose, shows off by posing on a chair, and falls over! And what if playing the fool was the best way of destabilising the established order (of the dance performance and of the world) a little?ĭaring to expose yourself in this way, naked before an audience, daring to sing opera when you are not a professional singer, daring to simultaneously take on the two behemoths that are the story of Carmen and the Shakespeare’s Sonnets – that really is daring! ![]() Did the dancer jump off her chair or did she fall? But let us re-examine the end of the sequence. The striptease takes place to military music! Could the naked seductress be a “little soldier”? This is a plausible interpretation since the first act of Carmen/Shakespeare, by Olga Mesa and Francisco Ruiz de Infante, deals with seduction and the balance of power in love relationships. The scene continues with the same irony: perching on a chair, her back to the audience, Olga Mesa makes great sweeping gestures with the fan and strikes her thighs. This is the image of the seductress seeking to beautify herself turned completely on its head. With the naughty air of a child who has done something silly but gained the complicity of the audience, she then devotes herself to a pseudo make-up session that consists of nothing but a series of grimaces. Then, as we listen to the chorus Avec la Garde montante from Bizet's Carmen, she undresses behind a projection screen and returns to the front, equipped only with a fan, which naturally is not enough to cover her. ![]() On stage, Olga Mesa adjusts the projectors. What François Barré wrote, in 1994, about performers practicing their art in the field of the contemporary art, can apply just as well to dancers and choreographers concerned with getting rid of learned gestures and revitalising their experience of dance. ![]() Their joint aim is to go beyond the contemplation of the masterpiece or the object, up to the point suggested as exclusive to artistic activity, and to substitute for it actions, durable or transitory forms likely to explore new states of consciousness.” For them, juxtaposing “art and life” means what is found in the resources of the personality, in the exercise of passions or the impulses, in the anonymous beauties that reality presents to us at every moment – experiences ready to transform those who succumb to them. “They seek new forms of freedom in art, sometimes beyond the aesthetic conventions of the time or the social norms which govern our behaviour. ![]() ![]() ![]() DEVELOP AND UPGRADE YOUR OWN F1® CAR: Accumulate essentially the most highly effective components to improve your automobile’s efficiency and discover one of the best configuration for every occasion!.HIGH-STAKES EVENTS: Race in time-limited Grand Prix™ Occasions for large rewards, and mix your scores over every occasion to rank on international leaderboards.CAREER MODE: Begin your very personal profession and signal as much as characterize an official F1® group for a season! A fully transparent quantum dot light-emitting diode (QD-LED) was fabricated by incorporating two types (anode and cathode) of graphene-based electrodes. When connected the right way around the LED is said to be "forward biased". If an LED is connected the wrong way around in a circuit (anode to negative and cathode to positive) it is said to be "reverse biased" and will not emit light. LEDs are diodes which means that current can only flow through an LED from the anode to the cathode and not the other way around. LEDs must always be connected in series with a resistor. Never connect an LED directly across a battery or other power source – it will burn out. The cathode is marked on the rim of the LED body with a flat area shown in the diagram.Īnother way to tell which lead is the anode and which is the cathode is to look at the two plates at the end of the leads inside the body of the LED. This post will cover some basic on LEDs and how to test an LED. On the physical LED, the longer lead (or leg) of the LED is the anode. The way that the schematic symbol of the LED maps to the physical LED is shown in the diagram below: An LED must be connected in a circuit the right way around – observe the polarity of the LED. The symbol for an LED used in circuit diagrams is shown here: LED PolarityĪn LED has a positive lead know as the anode and a negative lead known as the cathode. Examples of LEDs used in Electronics LED Symbol LEDs are like small light bulbs and are available in different sizes and colours. It also gives you better control over the two different currents, but it isn't free. The LED (Light Emitting Diode) is exactly what it name suggests – a diode that emits light. Resistors are really cheap (unless you have super high requirements), and a resistor generally doesn't take up a lot of space. Is the cost significant? It really depends. Just be aware that sometimes the arrangement of parts does matter, and other times it doesn't. It's not unreasonable because a typical small LED's current is below the limit of being safe to drive directly from the MCU, but is slightly worry-some if you have a lot of other stuff going on. It's unclear from the original question if the kit/tutorials you're using have this type of LED driving circuit. This is an extra part we would have to have in our design meaning extra cost and space. If we instead moved R1 above Q1 or even above D1, we would have to add an additional resistor between MCU output and Q1 to limit the base current. In the above schematic we are using the resistor R1 to both limit current flowing through the LED as well as limiting the base current (current from MCU output to R1). Simulate this circuit – Schematic created using CircuitLab By cleverly placing the resistor it can serve multiple functions at the same time, thus allowing you to reduce the part count and save some money/space. For example, sometimes people will use a BJT transistor to allow for higher current drives through the LED because micro controller pins are limited to low current outputs. ![]() However, there are designs for driving LED's using transistors where choosing where you place your resistor does matter. You have non-reactive components (ideally, which is pretty close to reality) thus any current flowing into the diode/resistor must flow out, thus current would be limited equally well by having the resistor on either the anode or cathode side. ![]() A gold wire, also known as a bonding wire. The anode must be connected to the positive end and the cathode to the negative. Light emitting diodes, or LEDs, are a specific type of diode which emits light when current passes through them. For it to work properly, the current must go from anode to cathode. Thus, an LED is polarized and will only emit light if it’s connected correctly. Usually as RedGrittyBrick said it doesn't matter. As mentioned, a diode will allow the current to flow in only one direction. ![]() ![]() To return to a broadband spectrogram, you can click "Spectrum"→ "Spectrogram Settings" → Set the Window Length to 0.005 (or the broadband window length of your choosing) → Click OKĪnd then you’ll be back to the default broadband spectrogram.īefore we illustrate how to measure pitch in Praat, let’s discuss what the pitch is and what it used for. If you set the view range roughly as 0-500 Hz for speech in this narrowband spectrogram, the contours of the harmonics will accurately represent the pitch contours of the voice, which can give you a sense of the pitch (F0) contour before using the Praat pitch tracker for more precise measurement. Now, you can see harmonics clearly in this narrowband spectrogram. You can adjust the window length by clicking " Spectrum" → " Spectrogram Settings" → set the " Window Length" to 0.025s (or the narrowband window length of your choosing) → Click OK. Narrowband spectrogram (Window Length: 0.025s ) can be used to look at the harmonics structure (F0 / Pitch information) (Figure 1.53).Broadband spectrogram ( Window Length: 0.005s) is used to observe the formant structure of sound, and it is the default setting in Praat.Wideband spectrogram is used to observe the formant structure while narrowband spectrograms reveal the harmonic structure (pitch information). For the window length around 20-30ms (bandwidth: 30-50Hz), the spectrogram is called "narrowband". There is no clear cut boundary between Broadband spectrograms and Narrowband spectrograms, if the window length is around 3-5 ms (bandwidth: 200-300Hz), the resulting spectrogram is called "wideband". The shorter the window length, the larger its bandwidth (Bandwidth = 1.299 / window length). Praat can provide you with both Broadband spectrogram and Narrowband spectrogram by adjusting the window length. You can adjust the View range by clicking "Spectrum" → "Spectrogram Settings" For music, we may need to focus on the area from 100 to 2,000 Hz. For speech, we normally set the range from 0 to 5,000 or 6,000 Hz, but for examining fricatives, we might need to set it as high as 15,000 Hz. View range decides how much of the spectrum is shown. The most important settings here are the window length and view range. Normally the waveform and spectrogram will be presented automatically if you select one file and click "View and Edit"as Figure 1.50. ![]() |
